The museum of Fisheries (Fiskerimuseet) opened in 1998 and the exhibitions focus on the fishingindustry that has given rise to the city’s economic growth.
In 1861, a wholesale dealer named Fredrik Hanssen set up a warehouse at Molja in Ålesund. In 1902, Trygve Jervell took over and continued for 20 years, before it was sold to Oluf Holm Ltd. in 1924.
Møre og Romsdal is the leading county of fisheries in the country, and over one third of the shippingfleet is based here. There is no other place in Norway exporting as much fish as is done from Ålesund.
